Traffic by water currently involves several safety issues and concerns for public and private transport as well as inefficiencies in operations control, such as:

  • chaotic traffic, in particular for the circulation of small vessels (taxi, freight, etc..);
  • verifying navigating vessels compliance with speed limits;
  • problems associated with waves caused by excessive traffic especially during peak hours;
  • direct and manual traffic controls by municipal authorities.

The Interactive on Shipping suite of services is designed to provide high-value added solutions for the marine sector.

GPS locator
This software allows you to locate support vessels on cartographic maps at any time; through a dashboard it provides information on vessels routes, thus enabling identification of those that are closest to the event site.

Vessels Allocation
The proximity criteria for identifying vessels is automatically and accurately applied by means of procedures that, based on the geographical location (latitude and longitude) of the intervention site, determine a list of vessels in the area, ordered by distance (from closest to farthest), which are active (not engaged in other activities) and have been authorized to handle the type of requested intervention. The following figure shows how, by developing various tables, the proximity criteria can be applied:

Notification to the designated vessel, identified in accordance with the proximity criteria, is made by telephone using the contact details found in the database. This process is carried out in an automated way,
and the operator simply has to communicate the location of the intervention site to the designated vessel. Communication is managed by the system and the designation result, accepted/refused, is displayed on the screen. If accepted, the system creates an intervention ticket that will be closed only when data on the intervention carried out are received.
The intervention ticket must be filled out by the user on board the Vessel through a WEB mask, in which some fields are already pre-populated by the system.

Saving Data
Each mobile system is equipped with an application that can save data relating to the journeys carried out during the daily service. These data are transmitted and stored in the central terminal at the end of the day, by connecting the mobile device to a personal computer pre-configured for reception.
The movements made by each vessel can be viewed through a control mask on the portal.

Azimuth is the first expert Community in the marine sector. Through a simple web interface you can stay in touch with other boats and share the following information in real-time:

  • vessel’s position;
  • points of interest;
  • navigation route;
  • weather pictures and conditions.

In addition, with Light Chat you can send instant messages at any time.

Maintenance requirements
Maintenance related issues are particularly crucial in the naval sector, both for the complexity of the equipment to be maintained, and the economic consequences related to service interruptionsdue to operational failures or inefficiencies. The market currently offers a range of technological services and products which are not integrated with one another and are specific for individual Segments. Only in a few cases are navigation data collected in a centralized way in order to be processed and analyzed by ground personnel. Back-office activities are carried out on the basis of unstructured input data and in many cases through manual processes.
It is increasingly necessary to use more structured and advanced information management systems and create an integrated technology “bridge” between ships and ground operations rooms.

Market analysis
The Italian naval industry is highly fragmented with a large number of players. There are few large shipowners characterized by an industrial business model.
Most of these operators have implemented SAP R/3 (in some cases also PM) but without integration with the technical control systems.
Also at the international level, only few operators have already deployed advanced control technologies integrated with the ERP. Ship maintenance costs account for about 8% of total operating costs (range 1-5 million €). About 70-80% of these costs involve repairs. The increase in traffic expected in the coming years may lead to an increase in these costs and to greater focus on preventive and predictive maintenance. Attention to safety will become central to shipping by water. The increasing requirements in terms of quality certification will require the adoption of the most advanced technological standards. This technological upgrading will also be required in order to preserve fleets competitiveness in the face of growing competition from Asia.

Current Critical Issues
“Reactive” rather than “proactive” approach to maintenance. The continued application of a system where maintenance is carried out in response to problems (breakdown maintenance) leaves no time to find out what the real causes of the problems are; most preventive maintenance is performed without carrying out a real assessment; evidence has been provided that a reduction of up to 5-10% in preventive maintenance has no impact on the correct operation of equipment; maintenance managers cannot produce documented reasons to justify maintenance projects, (often the only justification is that maintenance is suggested by suppliers); scarcity of information and documentation prevents effective maintenance of large installations, not taking advantage of possible savings when maintenance is performed on similar equipment.

The LCSM model
Developing integrated solutions and processes in order to:

  • maximize equipment uptime at the best technical conditions, providing acceptable quality standards and complying with stated safety levels;
  • optimize the resources involved in maintenance activities (hours of in-house work, materials, tools, contracts);
  • reduce productivity losses due to maintenance;
  • identify areas for potential cost reduction;
  • for each technical component provide a set of historical information that can be used to identify and analyze the reasons for recurring failures;
  • optimize the components/systems life cycle;
  • minimize the inventory of non-strategic or infrequently used spare parts;
  • rationalize relations with third parties, helping the company in identifying key suppliers;
